US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will meet at the White House on Tuesday. The leaders' meeting coincides with a possible Senate vote on a bill that would impose sweeping sanctions on Russia.
According to Reuters, citing Senate advisers, Zelenskiy will attend the funeral of US Senator Lindsey Graham later that day and hold a meeting with the Senate in the evening.
Bill Targeting Russia and Iran
The bill, spearheaded by Senator Graham, would impose a 100% tariff on goods from the five largest importers of Russian oil and natural gas, including China and India. If passed, economic pressure on Russia would increase.
Trump intervened at the last minute to demand that sanctions on Iran be added to the bill. Zelenskiy, meanwhile, told Trump ally Laura Loomer last week that the idea was 'a great idea.'
Ukraine-Iran Tensions and the US Connection
Wars on two separate fronts intersected in recent days. On Saturday, Ukraine attacked an Iranian tanker in the Caspian Sea. Ukraine's Ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, stated the tanker was carrying drones and military components from Iran to Russia. Iran vowed retaliation.
Former US Ambassador William Courtney said that by striking Iranian vessels, Kyiv both benefited itself and pleased the US by attacking Washington's 'number one enemy.' However, Courtney added that while Zelenskiy supports Iran sanctions, Ukraine would not want to be too closely associated with the US's 'unpopular' war on Iran.
Improvement in Relations and Military Cooperation
After a tense meeting in February 2025, the bond between Trump and Zelenskiy, which appeared cold, has improved significantly in recent months. Earlier this month, the two leaders agreed to allow joint production of Patriot air defense system interceptors, which are critical to Ukraine's air defense.
Ukraine and the US are also closing in on an agreement on joint drone (UAV) production. While Ukraine is on track to produce between 6 and 7 million short-range attack UAVs this year, the Pentagon's $1.1 billion production program will have ordered fewer than 200,000 UAVs cumulatively by February 2027.
Latest Situation on the Front Lines
Intense fighting continues along Ukraine's front lines. On Monday, Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine killed seven people and wounded more than 20.
In Russia's Belgorod region, a Ukrainian UAV struck a commercial building, killing one and wounding two. The heaviest fighting is taking place in the directions of Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.
