The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) published a report on the forest fires that occurred in Italy this summer. According to the report, approximately 70,000 hectares of land were destroyed in the fires. This area is equivalent to about 100,000 football fields.
According to WWF data, about one-third of the fires broke out in protected areas. The amount of land destroyed by forest fires in the country has increased by 133 percent over the last 20 years.
The report also shed light on the situation in other European countries. In Spain, 219,000 hectares and in France, 91,000 hectares were reduced to ashes in wildfires this summer.
WWF EU Forests Officer Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove said in a statement: "Europe is burning, but while firefighters are desperately spraying water, our leaders are sitting in air-conditioned rooms discussing how much they should water down the EU's climate and nature laws. The real question should be how much they need to strengthen these laws to prevent future disasters."
