Russia has taken a significant step to address fuel shortages following Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries. The Energy Ministry has temporarily allowed the sale of gasoline grades with lower environmental standards to boost domestic supply.
In a written statement, the ministry said it had temporarily permitted the production, import, and sale of Euro-2, Euro-3, and Euro-4 gasoline until July 1, 2027. The statement stressed that the decision does not signify a change in long-term environmental policy and is temporary in nature.
Due to the Ukrainian attacks, many refineries have been taken offline for maintenance, and fuel sales are being restricted in some regions. The Russian government had previously banned exports of gasoline and diesel. The new decision aims to secure domestic supply under these conditions.
Euro-2, Euro-3, and Euro-4 gasoline contain higher levels of sulfur and certain pollutants compared to the Euro-5 standard. They are therefore classified as fuels with lower environmental standards.
