The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has established a secret task force to expand its operations against Cuba and pressure the Havana government. The New York Times, citing sources close to the matter, reports that the unit will operate as part of efforts launched under former President Donald Trump that aim for economic, political and leadership change in Cuba.
The report said the task force would allow for the transfer of more financial, human and technical resources to Cuba. It added that field agents, intelligence analysts, cyber experts and personnel focused on covert influence operations have begun to be assigned to the unit.
The report said the main goal of the team is to create divisions within Cuba's political elite and encourage the replacement of officials seen as anti-US with figures more open to Trump's demands.
The CIA declined to comment on the claims.
