Significant progress has been made in diplomatic contacts aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, Witkoff's office said. Following visits by U.S. representatives to Moscow and Kyiv, the office said the next stages for resolving the conflict had also been determined.
Before the visits, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a three-day ceasefire to create suitable conditions for talks. The contacts were intended to help advance dialogue aimed at ending the war.
Separate meetings held with Putin and Zelenskyy
Witkoff, Jared Kushner and representatives of the U.S. National Security Council, the State Department and the Treasury Department held separate meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russia's and Ukraine's proposals were discussed during the contacts.
National security advisers from the United Kingdom, Germany and France also attended the meetings in Kyiv. The participants jointly assessed the path forward toward a resolution.
Witkoff's office announced that significant progress had been made as a result of the meetings and that the next steps for additional trilateral talks had been determined. The statement said U.S. President Donald Trump was making intensive efforts to halt the conflict and achieve lasting peace.
Putin-Trump contacts planned to continue
Putin met with Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Saturday. Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Putin, said after the meeting that the parties had confirmed their intention to continue direct contacts between Putin and Trump.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the meeting held between Putin, Witkoff and Kushner on September 5 as a small step toward peace at a press conference on September 7.
Following the contacts in Kyiv, Zelenskyy held a meeting with the negotiating team. The Ukrainian leader said joint and active efforts needed to continue to advance diplomacy.
