A US court has set the trial schedule for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. According to ABC News, US Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled at a preliminary hearing that the trial will begin on June 1, 2027.
Maduro and Flores were detained on January 3 during a military intervention operation in the capital Caracas, where explosions and the sound of warplanes were heard. Following the incident, the Venezuelan government accused the US of attacking civilian and military targets in the country.

Trump's statement on the operation
Then-US President Donald Trump had announced that a large-scale operation was carried out against the Venezuelan leader and that Maduro and his wife were taken out of the country. US Attorney General Pam Bondi also announced that charges had been formally filed against the couple.
Immunity defense
Maduro's lawyer Barry Pollack argued that his client, as the president of a sovereign state, has judicial immunity. Pollack also stated that they would challenge the indictment.
