Russian Deputy Head of State Nikolay Patrushev issued a significant warning during his 2013 meeting with then-US President Barack Obama in Washington. Patrushev recounted the meeting in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Patrushev revealed that he told Obama they would not accept any interference in Russia's internal affairs and would respond in kind if necessary. The Russian official said Obama expressed genuine surprise at this statement, saying that 'democratic America could do this but Russia could not.'
Nikolay Patrushev served as Secretary of the Russian Security Council from 2008 to 2024. He made a working visit to the US in May 2013, during which he held this meeting with Obama.
Patrushev, who turned 75 on July 11, previously served as FSB Director (1999-2008). A recipient of the Hero of Russia title, Patrushev has been awarded numerous honors, including being a full cavalier of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
