Public perceptions of the US in South Korea have shifted, with unfavorable views reaching a majority for the first time in more than 20 years.
A Pew Research Center survey found that the share of South Koreans with an unfavorable view of the US rose from 39% in 2025 to 55% in 2026. The share expressing a favorable view of the US was measured at 45%.
Trust in Washington declines
The share of respondents who viewed the US as a reliable partner also fell from 83% in 2022, during Joe Biden’s presidency, to 57% in 2026.
Only 14% of respondents approved of Donald Trump’s tariff policy. Meanwhile, 75% disapproved of Trump’s policy toward Iran.
US remains the most important ally
Despite the rise in unfavorable views of Washington, 84% of South Koreans considered the US their country’s most important ally. The figure stood at 89% the previous year.
