US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that Washington would intensify economic pressure on Iran and expand sanctions. Bessent claimed that the conflict with Iran had entered its "final stage."
In a statement on social media, Bessent described the new phase as an "economic attack." He argued that it would be the largest financial attack ever carried out against an adversary.
Bessent claimed that US President Donald Trump had destroyed Iran's military capabilities and argued that the government in Tehran was continuing its "blackmail" by invoking security guarantees.
Bessent said the process had come to an end during the Trump administration. He said those concerned about the consequences of opposing Washington should not forget the cost of testing US patience.
The US Treasury secretary also said Trump had created the conditions under which he would be prepared to use all the powers and measures that many people had previously considered impossible.
Bessent said they aimed to cut off all economic channels supporting the Iranian government and completely isolate Tehran.
