Voters in the Canadian province of Alberta chose to remain in Canada in a referendum on Oct. 19. According to a CBC News projection based on early results, about 76% of voters backed the "remain" option, while about 24% supported starting the legal process toward a binding referendum on separation.
The vote was nonbinding. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she was "very pleased" with the early results; she had previously pledged not to hold a second independence referendum while she remains premier. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said: "They chose unity, to build together, and to take care of each other."

The separation question was one of 10 on the ballot. Counting continued on the other nine questions, on immigration and constitutional issues; as of the morning of Oct. 20, eight of them had majority "yes" votes. Smith had said "yes" votes would give her a mandate to bargain with Carney.
Two prominent separatists said they would wait for the full tallies before drawing conclusions.
