U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that the European Union had paid Russia $250 billion for energy, as he defended his decision to allow Russian diesel to be sold on world markets.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that the EU had paid Russia $250 billion for energy and that the “fake media” did not even want to come close to the subject. “I made the right choice for the American people — America First, always!” he added.
Trump did not say what period the figure covers.

Criticism in Washington
Trump had earlier thanked Vladimir Putin for the understanding on Russian diesel supplies. The decision to allow Russian diesel to be sold on the global market for six months drew sharp criticism from influential Democratic senators, and criticism is also growing within the Republican Party.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed that the United States strike a diesel deal with Ukraine instead of Russia. Germany, meanwhile, has said it will maintain its sanctions on Russia despite Washington’s decision.
