The humanitarian crisis in Palestine has shown that protecting human life and cultural heritage is a shared responsibility. TÜRKSOY Secretary General Sultan Raev made the assessment at the high-level meeting of the Group of Friends of the UN Alliance of Civilizations in New York.
The meeting was chaired by UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Miguel Angel Moratinos. Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Levent Gümrükçü, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Yalçın Rafiyev, Kazakh First Deputy Foreign Minister Yerjan Aşıkbayev and Turkmenistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Vepa Hacıyev, also addressed the meeting.

Wars’ impact on cultural heritage discussed
Raev said wars destroy not only human lives but also the memory of cities, sacred sites, historical artifacts and the civilizational heritage built over generations. He said developments in Palestine had once again reminded all humanity of this responsibility.
Raev said the world was facing serious challenges, including wars, forced migration, hate speech and social polarization. He stressed that protecting cultural heritage and establishing mutual trust between societies were essential for lasting peace.
Dialogue and preventive diplomacy take center stage
Gümrükçü, one of the co-sponsors of the UN Alliance of Civilizations, said cultural diversity should be viewed not as a threat but as a source of strength. He highlighted the importance of intercivilizational dialogue in the face of rising intolerance and polarization.
Raev said cultural diplomacy was more than a complementary element in international relations and was one of the powerful tools of preventive diplomacy. He said the shared cultural heritage of the Turkic world was integrated with the universal values of humanity.
Raev said TÜRKSOY had been working for more than 30 years to protect, preserve and promote the shared cultural heritage of Turkic peoples around the world. He added that the organization was ready to share its experience in cultural diplomacy with the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

Cultural cooperation projects proposed
Raev said TÜRKSOY and the UN Alliance of Civilizations could develop new projects on youth exchanges, cultural dialogue programs, literary and artistic gatherings, the protection of shared cultural heritage and preventive diplomacy through culture.
Yalçın Rafiyev said the 7th World Forum for Intercultural Dialogue, to be held in Baku, would make an important contribution to the work of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
Yerjan Aşıkbayev stressed the importance of strengthening interfaith harmony and promoting a culture of peaceful coexistence. Vepa Hacıyev also highlighted the role of dialogue, mutual respect and adherence to international law in preventing conflicts, saying they were ready to further develop cooperation with the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
