Kyrgyzstan’s presidential election will be held on Wednesday, 27 January 2027. Parliament adopted the draft resolution on the election date during a session held on Thursday, 24 September.
Parliament Speaker Marlen Mamataliyev said that setting the date would ensure the election process was conducted according to the timetable and procedures prescribed by law. Mamataliyev said the decision was intended to enable voters to participate actively in the election campaign.
Mamataliyev said voters who cast their ballots would receive their full wages for the day of the election and stressed that the electoral process must proceed within the legal framework.
Candidates will not have to leave office
Mamataliyev cited Article 21 of the constitutional law on the election of the president of the Kyrgyz Republic and members of parliament. Under the provision, lawmakers and the president will not have to leave office if they are registered as candidates and will continue exercising their powers.
The parliament speaker said lawmakers had also contested the previous election without giving up their seats and that candidates had competed on equal terms. Mamataliyev said holding office as a lawmaker did not give candidates an advantage, noting that half of those who ran in the previous election were re-elected while the other half were not.
Number of campaign staff reduced
Mamataliyev said they aimed to minimise the influence of administrative resources in election campaigns and announced that the number of campaign staff permitted to work on campaign teams had been reduced to give candidates broader opportunities to participate.
Mamataliyev said the number of campaign staff permitted for parliamentary candidates had been cut from 1,000 to approximately 300. He added that the permitted number for presidential candidates had also been reduced to below 10,000.
The parliament speaker said the election should not be politicised unnecessarily and that hasty conclusions should be avoided, calling for no paths outside those provided for by law to be pursued. He stressed that the election date, stages and procedures to be followed were clearly set out in law.
Mamataliyev said parliament had fulfilled its constitutional responsibility and that the process ahead would proceed within the legal framework. He added that all sides must comply with the requirements of the law and the established timetable.
