Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that she had asked her ministry to determine whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would pass through Canadian airspace during his expected trip to New York.
Speaking to journalists in New York, Anand said Canada continued to respect the decisions of international courts. However, when asked whether Netanyahu was considered a war criminal, she did not give a direct answer.
Call for support for Gaza and the West Bank
The Canadian foreign minister said people affected by Israeli attacks in Gaza and the West Bank should be supported. Anand added that issues related to crimes against humanity should also be addressed.
ICC warrant for Netanyahu and Gallant
On November 21, 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Israel’s former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in connection with alleged war crimes committed in Gaza.
Netanyahu is expected to travel to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meeting. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in October 2025 that Netanyahu would be arrested if he entered the country.
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also responded to a question about whether the ICC arrest warrant would be enforced if Netanyahu came to New York. Mamdani said the city administration did not have independent authority to make an arrest and that such a step would have to be taken by the federal government.
