United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made significant statements at a press conference in Damascus following his two-day visit to Syria. Guterres stressed that all sanctions imposed on Syria must be immediately lifted.
Noting that he also visited Sednaya Prison during his trip, the UN Secretary-General said,
"I was deeply horrified by the allegations that tens of thousands of people were killed and tortured."
Guterres expressed hope about Syria's future, stating that the country needs to achieve security, stability, and economic opportunities. Taking a clear stance on sanctions, Guterres said,
"All sanctions must be lifted immediately. The Syrian people should not bear the burden of recovery alone."
The UN Secretary-General, in his call to the international community, urged political, economic, and practical support to strengthen basic services, infrastructure, education, and health systems in Syria. He also noted that assistance is needed for the safe and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced persons.
Guterres said he was impressed by his meeting with Syrian People's Assembly Speaker Abdulhamit Avvak, and that he received information about the assembly's work on legislation and internal regulations.
Stating that the UN is ready to support accountability, transitional justice, human rights, and reconciliation efforts in Syria, Guterres stressed that the participation of all segments of society is essential for the rule of law, a permanent constitution, and free elections.
Guterres strongly condemned Israel's violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, saying,
"These violations are unacceptable and must end."
He also announced that he would present a comprehensive report on Israel's violations to the UN in a month.
Responding to questions from an AA reporter, Guterres expressed optimism about the future of cooperation, stating,
"I have no doubt that with the support of the international community, the Syrian people can rebuild the country."
The UN Secretary-General, who also met with civil society representatives and ordinary people during his visit, added that he saw great determination in them.
