Russia's state nuclear energy company Rosatom said Ukrainian drones struck and sank the container ship Yanina near the port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea early on Saturday.
Rosatom stated that all 17 crew members were forced to abandon the vessel, but were rescued and are in good health. In a statement on its Telegram channel, the company said the ship was carrying civilian cargo including frozen food and construction materials, and contained no nuclear materials.
Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev called the attack 'piracy and maritime banditry.' Ukraine has not yet commented on the incident.
Civilian vessels have been attacked in the Black Sea repeatedly since the Russia-Ukraine war began. Ukraine has previously accused Russia of using the Black Sea to ship sanctioned goods. Russia has carried out missile strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure and ships approaching ports; Kyiv calls these attacks war crimes.
