Russia said two people were killed and 20 injured in a Ukrainian drone attack targeting Moscow and the surrounding region. The attack took place on the final day of the country's three-day parliamentary, regional and local elections.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said the capital had faced one of the largest drone attacks in its history. Sobyanin said more than 1,600 Ukrainian drones had been shot down since Saturday, including 450 that were neutralized as they approached Moscow.
Sobyanin said some drones reached the Moscow Oil Refinery and caused damage at the facility. He said another drone struck a residential building, but no one was killed in that incident.
The Moscow mayor claimed the attack had clearly been planned to disrupt the elections. Sobyanin said that objective had not been achieved.
Fires and evacuations in the Moscow region
Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov said the drone attack damaged civilian infrastructure and caused fires at several locations across the region.
Vorobyov said the most serious consequences occurred in Ramensky District, where a downed drone caused a fire on the roof of a 21-story apartment building. Following the fire, 400 people were evacuated and 20 vehicles were damaged.
According to Vorobyov, one person was killed and five injured when a drone struck a three-story apartment building in Sofyino. Another person was killed in Orekhovo-Zuyevo District.
The governor later announced that the total number of injured people in the Moscow region had risen to 20. He said three children were among the injured and that 15 people had been hospitalized.
Russian Defense Ministry: 1,110 drones intercepted or destroyed
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that 1,110 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted or destroyed overnight over Russian territory, Crimea and the Black Sea. The ministry also claimed that the attack was the largest carried out since the beginning of the year.
Zelenskyy: Long-range strikes had a significant impact
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had confirmed the attack and that Ukraine's long-range strikes had had a significant impact in the Moscow region.
Zelenskyy said one of Russia's important oil and logistics facilities had been hit. He argued that these facilities finance war activities and announced that sanctions had also been imposed on a facility in the Voronezh region.
The Ukrainian leader called on Moscow to choose peace by ending the war and building air defense lines instead. Zelenskyy said steps to reduce tensions in the areas of energy and food security were on the agenda, adding that this required political will.
Attack took place on the final day of the elections
According to Russia's Central Election Commission, more than 111 million people were eligible to vote in the parliamentary, regional and local elections.
The elections determined the 450 members of the State Duma. Of these seats, 225 were filled through party lists and 225 through single-member constituencies.
Zelenskyy had announced on Saturday that he had approved new long-range strikes against Russia and that they were preparing to expand this capability.
