Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the provisions of the sanctions law targeting Russia and Iran to be implemented as soon as possible.
In a social media statement on Saturday, September 19, Zelenskyy thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for signing the law. He also thanked the senators and members of the House of Representatives who supported the legislation prepared by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
Zelenskyy said that during Graham’s visits to Ukraine, he had argued that pressure on Russia should not be eased, sanctions should be strengthened and ways to achieve peace should be pursued. Zelenskyy said this approach should also continue in other capitals.
Zelenskyy pointed to capitals where Russian oil is purchased, financial services are provided to Russia and Russian companies linked to the war and Vladimir Putin are included in ordinary commercial relations in other countries.
Zelenskyy said Graham had never doubted that the United States had enough power to confront “dictators” and achieve results when the right steps were taken. He said fully implementing the sanctions law as soon as possible would be the best way to honor Graham’s memory.
Zelenskyy said peace would be the best reward for everyone contributing to pressure on Russia to end the war in Ukraine, stressing that the problems and threats caused by the war must come to an end.
“Peace comes through strength. Calm is secured through security. The best guarantee of security is determination.”
