Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced on October 25 that the tender to restore the historic Ani Bridge over the Akhuryan River (Arpachay) in Kars province, on the border with Armenia, had been completed. The restoration will be carried out under the coordination of a joint commission of Türkiye and Armenia.
The restoration tender was held on September 16, and the contract was signed on September 28. The protocol defining the scope and procedures of the work was signed in Yerevan on May 4 in the presence of Türkiye’s Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz. Türkiye’s representatives on the joint commission include the Ministry of Transport and the General Directorate of Highways.

According to Uraloğlu, the bridge was built in the 10th century along the Silk Road, and only the remains of its supports have survived. The 31-meter-long arch span collapsed in 1807.
The archaeological complex of Ani, which includes the bridge, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016.
Türkiye and Armenia have been negotiating the normalization of their relations through special representatives since 2021.
