As security contacts between Washington and Moscow continue, U.S. President Donald Trump said CIA Director John Ratcliffe’s visit to Moscow could produce results. Trump said the visit could contribute to efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump confirmed on Wednesday during a phone call with conservative radio host Glenn Beck that he had sent Ratcliffe to Moscow the previous day. The U.S. president said, "Something could come from this visit. We are working very hard to end the war."
Kremlin did not disclose the scope of the visit
Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow on Tuesday and held a series of meetings. The visit was the first by a CIA director to Russia since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.
The Kremlin confirmed that Ratcliffe had come to Russia as part of contacts between the security services but did not share details of the meetings. The Kremlin also said that the CIA director did not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump rejected claims about NATO and Iran sanctions
When Glenn Beck asked Trump whether the Kremlin had been warned not to test NATO’s resolve during the visit or whether Iran sanctions had been discussed, Trump said neither option was on the agenda.
Trump described Ratcliffe’s visit to Moscow as "somewhat routine" in order to limit expectations. Reiterating his goal of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, the U.S. president said both sides wanted the war to end.
Russian officials, meanwhile, said they expected U.S. special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to visit Russia as part of efforts to achieve peace with Ukraine.
