U.S. President Donald Trump said “major progress” had been made in efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war and announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would meet soon.
Answering reporters’ questions after campaign rallies in Texas, Trump said he had discussed both the war in Ukraine and the conflict involving Iran aboard Air Force One with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
We are making major progress on Russia and Ukraine. A meeting will be arranged very soon.
Asked who would attend the meeting, Trump replied, “President Putin and President Zelenskyy.” He did not provide details on when or where the meeting would take place or what format it would follow.
Could be first face-to-face contact since war began
U.S.-mediated Moscow-Kyiv peace talks were held in three rounds in Abu Dhabi and Geneva in January and February this year.

If the meeting takes place, Putin and Zelenskyy will have met face to face for the first time since the war began in February 2022.
Trump points to post-election period for Iran
Trump also claimed that Iran’s leadership wanted to reach an agreement with Washington but was most likely trying to postpone negotiations until after the November 3 midterm elections.
“We are in a very good position. The question is when I want to finish this,” Trump said, without giving a clear answer when asked whether Iran would be attacked again after the elections.
Anything is possible, but I cannot tell you that.
The war between the United States and Iran began with attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran at the end of February, then turned into a regional conflict. Although the parties reached an understanding on a ceasefire and peace agreement, the conflict has not ended completely.
