The Yellow Vests movement once again brought people onto the streets of Paris, Lyon, Rennes, Marseille and Toulouse. The participants, joined by trade unions and students, protested against the rising cost of living as well as the government’s education and economic policies.
Tear gas and water cannons
In Paris, police used tear gas against demonstrators near the Charenton gates, where the march ended. In Rennes, officers used gas and batons, while water cannons were deployed in Toulouse. In Marseille, masked people threw stones and bottles at police officers.

Curfew and thousands detained
The October 17 protests were accompanied by unrest: more than 3,000 retail outlets were damaged or looted, after which the authorities tightened security measures, including imposing a partial curfew. Despite the bans, the Yellow Vests took to the streets again on October 24.
More than 1,000 people have been injured since the protests began, and around 2,000 have been detained.
