Palestinian flags became a prominent feature of Saturday’s protests held in many European cities. Participants protested against the rising cost of living, war and their governments’ policies while expressing solidarity with Gaza.
In Italy, thousands took to the streets to protest against the war, rearmament and the country’s involvement in military conflicts. Marchers carried Palestinian flags in many cities. Police detained 371 people in eight cities.
Flags near the Colosseum
In Rome, a march carrying Italian and Palestinian flags reached the Colosseum. Police used water cannons and tear gas, and 43 young people were taken to a police station after balaclavas and keffiyehs were found on them.
In Bologna, around 300 participants in a march organized by Palestinian youth and student groups clashed with police, and six people were hospitalized.
Water cannons in Paris
Palestinian flags were also present at protests in France, where 410,000 people took to the streets and nearly 1,000 were detained. In Paris, police dispersed demonstrators carrying a Palestinian flag with a water cannon.

In Grenoble, Allan Brunon of the left-wing party La France Insoumise posed for a photograph with demonstrators holding Palestinian flags. The party is known for criticizing Israel’s war in Gaza.
Barricades in Belgium
The wave of protests spread from France to Belgium, where demonstrators were seen building barricades out of electric scooters. During unrest in Brussels on October 17, 150 people were detained.
Threat of famine in Gaza
Solidarity protests are taking place amid renewed fears of famine in Gaza. Last week, after Israel closed the crossings, humanitarian aid deliveries were halted for six consecutive days, leaving the enclave short of eggs, flour and onions.
Due to a lack of funds, the World Food Programme reduced the number of recipients of monthly food assistance from 1.6 million to 1.1 million. The price of a package of bread in Gaza rose from 5 to 12 shekels.
