The Blagoveshchensk–Heihe cable car, which will connect Russia and China across the Amur River, is targeted to open in May 2027. Amur Region Governor Vasily Orlov said the Amur Economic Forum in May 2027 is the leading date under consideration for the opening, although the schedule could change.
The cross-border line over the Amur
The cable car will be 976 meters long and become the world’s first line connecting two cities in different countries. Ten load-bearing cables have been installed for the project, each weighing approximately 30 tons.
The cabins will travel along a route 70 meters above the river and will carry 110 passengers. The cabins, described as having no equivalent in Russia, are scheduled to be installed in September.
Commissioning process and passenger capacity
According to Orlov, the cable car project is largely complete, and production of the cabins has also been finished. Following installation, commissioning in line with technical inspection requirements is expected to take approximately 1,200 hours.
The journey between Blagoveshchensk and Heihe will take approximately 2.5 minutes. The line is projected to have an annual passenger capacity of 2.5 million.
Blagoveshchensk terminal
On the Russian side, a four-story passenger terminal with a total area of 26,000 square meters is under construction. The facility will include a cable car station and platform, as well as a Russian border checkpoint, duty-free shop, restaurants, and commercial and entertainment areas.
The Eastern Economic Forum is being held in Vladivostok from September 1 to 4.
