UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Friday to discuss developments in the Middle East and efforts to strengthen regional stability.
The two leaders exchanged views on developing the strategic partnership between the United Arab Emirates and Russia and advancing cooperation that would serve their shared interests.
Regional security and stability
The discussion focused on regional and international developments, as well as efforts to strengthen security, stability and peace in the Middle East.
Maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz was also among the topics discussed in the regional context. The leaders addressed efforts to resolve disagreements between the United States and Iran through diplomatic channels.
Developments in the Strait of Hormuz
Washington and Tehran reached an agreement on June 14, under Pakistan’s mediation, providing for the release of frozen Iranian assets in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Disagreements over the implementation of the agreement renewed tensions, while Iran restricted maritime traffic. Military clashes between the parties, which began on July 8, lasted approximately two weeks.
Following the clashes, Iran resumed talks with Oman on establishing safe passage routes for vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
