A delegation from Syria’s Ministry of Defense inspected Hmeimim Air Base in Latakia before meeting with Russian military officials.
The meeting was attended by Syrian Chief of General Staff Major General Ali al-Nuhsan, Air Force Commander Major General Asim Hawari and Navy Commander Major General Mohammed al-Suud.
The future of Hmeimim and Tartus
Russia intervened in Syria’s civil war in 2015 at the request of the Assad administration and established military bases in Hmeimim and Tartus. During the war, hundreds of attacks on civilian areas were launched from these bases.
After the Assad administration was overthrown in December 2024, Moscow and Syria’s new administration held negotiations on the future of the bases.
The sides agreed to gradually transfer Hmeimim Air Base and commercial berth No. 4 at Tartus Port to civilian administration.
