Units of the Russian army clashed with foreign mercenaries in the settlement of Belitskoye in the Donetsk People's Republic. Denis Shapovalov, a sniper in the 5th Guards Brigade of the 51st Combined Arms Army, told RIA Novosti that while clearing a multi-story building, they spotted a group of Polish mercenaries.
Shapovalov said, "There was a group of Polish mercenaries in a building. We tried to communicate with them in Russian and English, but they didn't understand us. We were ordered to attack them." The soldier recounted that they carried out an attack with two groups; while one group provided a distraction, his group entered through the attic and neutralized the mercenaries with grenades. He noted that they heard the mercenaries cursing in Polish and thereby understood they were Polish.
Kirill Shklyayev, a platoon commander in the same brigade, also told RIA Novosti that they encountered a Hungarian mercenary during the battles in Belitskoye.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on July 23 that the settlement of Belitskoye in the Donetsk People's Republic had been liberated.
