Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, made statements regarding the UK's enriched uranium shipments to Ukraine.
In his statement to RIA Novosti, Ulyanov referred to a previous announcement from the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The announcement stated that uranium enrichment company Urenco, with state support, would supply enriched uranium for nuclear power plants to Ukrainian firm Energoatom over two years, with a total cost of $280 million.
The Russian diplomat emphasized that such shipments do not violate the non-proliferation regime, provided IAEA safeguards are applied to the material. Ulyanov said, 'They do not pose serious risks, and there is no need for additional control mechanisms as long as IAEA inspectors carry out their verification activities clearly and responsibly, as stipulated in the agency's statute.'
Ulyanov also noted that no incidents have occurred so far that would cast doubt on the adequacy of existing IAEA safeguards mechanisms regarding the nuclear program. The Russian representative said, 'There have been no incidents. Therefore, we currently have no reason to worry about this.'
