The Russian Defense Ministry announced that 71 drones sent by Ukraine were neutralized overnight. According to the ministry, air defense systems operated over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Rostov regions, Crimea, and the Black Sea throughout the night of July 4-5.
The fixed-wing drones were destroyed between 8:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Moscow time. The Rostov region also came under a missile attack that night. Regional governor Yuri Slyusar stated that aerial targets were hit in the city of Rostov-on-Don and four districts.
Casualties in Crimea
In annexed Crimea, one person was killed and two were injured as a result of a Ukrainian attack. Crimean governor Sergey Aksyonov said that one of the injured is in serious condition.
Damage in Rostov
Debris from a downed drone in the Rostov region damaged the windows of a restaurant, but no casualties or fire were reported.
Ukraine's drone strategy
Drone attacks on Russian territory have continued since 2022, when the special military operation in Ukraine began. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy said in March 2023 that domestically produced drones were striking strategic targets in Russia and that the whole world was seeing it.
Zelenskiy stressed that Ukraine would 'respond fairly' to Russia. In May 2023, a drone exploded over the Senate Palace in the Kremlin, and the Moscow City business center was hit by drones multiple times. The border regions of Bryansk, Belgorod, Kursk, and Crimea are also frequently targeted.
In a statement in June 2026, Zelenskiy said that Ukrainian drones could travel more than 3,000 kilometers and would increase their strike range inside Russian territory. The Ukrainian presidential office also announced in August 2023 that drone attacks on Russia would 'increase'.
