Russia described an attack carried out by Ukraine in the Caspian Sea as an act of aggression violating international law. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Ukraine attacked an Iranian commercial vessel with drones.
Zakharova said the ship was carrying civilian cargo from Russia's city of Astrakhan, adding, 'Such criminal actions show that the Kyiv administration is seeking to expand the geography of its terrorist activities.' The spokesperson emphasized that the attack poses a threat to the security of regional countries and stressed that the Caspian Sea should be a zone of peace and cooperation.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), however, announced on July 25 that drones attacked a Russian-owned oil platform in the Caspian Sea as well as ships allegedly used for military cargo shipments between Iran and Russia.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also stated in a post on social media platform X that this action will not go unanswered.
