Mediazona has once again been entered into Russia’s state register of “foreign agents” under a decision by the country’s Justice Ministry. The exiled news outlet had previously been removed from the list after its legal entity was dissolved.
In its latest decision, the ministry accused Mediazona of spreading false information about Russian law enforcement. The outlet’s anti-war coverage was also cited among the grounds for the decision.
The decision also said that Mediazona had published content from entities previously classified as “foreign agents” and “undesirable organizations.”
Mediazona’s previous status
Mediazona was first designated a “foreign agent” in 2021. Its status in the state registers ended after ZP Limited, the outlet’s original legal entity, was dissolved.
Obligations imposed by the status
Since Russia began applying the status in 2012, hundreds of cultural workers, journalists, businesspeople, media outlets and other organizations have been added to the list.
Individuals and organizations with “foreign agent” status must include a lengthy legal disclaimer in their public statements and social media posts.
