As Russia establishes a high-tech industrial cluster in Moscow focused on producing different types of batteries, Vladimir Putin said the country aims to meet most of its domestic battery demand through domestic production by 2030.
Putin attended the opening ceremony of a new electric battery production facility commissioned by Rosatom via video conference. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, Renera CEO Anastasia Mikhailova and Sberbank Deputy Chairman of the Management Board Anatoly Popov also attended the ceremony.
Energy storage technologies to be expanded
The Russian President said energy storage systems were important because they strengthen the country's technological sovereignty, contribute to the growth of modern economic sectors and support efforts to address environmental problems.
Putin said demand for these systems was rising and noted that batteries were used in a range of civilian and specialized products. He cited autonomous systems, robotics and environmentally friendly electric transport as examples.
Putin said energy storage systems needed to be integrated more extensively into electricity grids, noting that this need was particularly pronounced in regions with insufficient energy resources. He said these systems could also help meet the growing capacity needs of data processing centers.
Production and research cluster in Moscow
Putin said companies in the industrial cluster established in Moscow would produce different types of batteries as well as conduct research and development activities.
Putin said that once the new facilities reached their planned capacity, Russia would meet most of its domestic battery demand through its own production in 2030. He added that the localization of production was intended to rely primarily on Russian raw materials.
Putin said the mineral resources used in energy storage systems needed to be exploited more efficiently. He also emphasized the need to develop new technologies, materials, electronic systems and software.
Call for post-lithium technologies
The Russian President called for a focus on post-lithium energy storage technologies to develop systems with higher energy capacity and greater environmental advantages.
Putin said technological leadership would not be possible without developing the energy sector and establishing modern storage systems with high energy capacity. He called on state-owned companies, large and small technology firms and startups to continuously improve technologies in this field.
The large battery production facility opened by Rosatom in the Kaliningrad region is still in the pilot operation stage.
