The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it has decided to close Romania's consulate in St. Petersburg.
In a statement, the ministry recalled that Romania had previously declared Russia's consul in Constanta as persona non grata and closed the consulate there.
The statement emphasized that Romania's decision was "groundless," noting that Moscow's ambassador, Cristian Istrate, was summoned to the ministry.
"The ambassador was handed a note stating that the Romanian consul general in St. Petersburg has been declared persona non grata and that the consulate will be closed," the statement said, adding that the decision was retaliation for Romania's move.
Romania's decision in May came after a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace during attacks on Ukraine and fell on an apartment building, injuring two people.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan had announced after the incident that Russia's consul in Constanta was declared persona non grata and the consulate was closed.
