Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev described the West's sanctions policy as seizure of property and compared these practices to piracy.
Medvedev said in a speech at the XIV International Legal Forum in St. Petersburg: "No matter how beautifully it is described, this is seizure of someone else's property; corsair seizure of ships and cargo, attacks on the foreign assets of countries. This includes the assets of our state and other states."
The European Union has adopted 20 sanctions packages against Russia since 2022 and continues to prepare new ones.
Russia has repeatedly stated that it will cope with the sanctions pressure that the West launched several years ago and has been gradually increasing. Russian leader Vladimir Putin also said in a previous statement that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is the West's long-term strategy, and that sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the global economy.
The XIV St. Petersburg International Legal Forum is being held in St. Petersburg on June 24-26.
