The Russia-based media group Rossiya Segodnya is marking the 85th anniversary of the Soviet Information Bureau (Sovinformburo), which was founded on 24 June 1941. The media group's Director General, Dmitry Kiselev, released a video message for the occasion.
In his message, Kiselev said, "Eighty-five years ago, in those difficult first days of the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet Information Bureau was born. It took on the mission of being the country's voice during a period of its greatest trials."
Kiselev noted that as they turned the pages of this unique history, they saw that the military bulletins marked the beginning of a great journey reflecting an entire era, and he said that the Sovinformburo archives contain key events from different periods.
A chronology of victories, space and culture
Kiselev stressed that these historical records document a chronology of victories, the exploration of space, the achievements of athletes and cultural figures, and Russia's role on the world stage.
Stating that the media group and its RIA Novosti and Sputnik agencies are the direct heirs of Sovinformburo, Kiselev also drew attention to the tradition of frontline war correspondence.
'Our correspondents are still on the front line today'
Kiselev said, "The traditions of the frontline correspondents who walked the roads of war alongside Soviet soldiers, recording every step towards the Great Victory, are not empty words for us." He continued: "Today our war correspondents are working on the front line, just like their illustrious predecessors 85 years ago. They are risking their lives so that the world can see the truth."
Founded on the third day of the Great Patriotic War, Sovinformburo later became the Novosti Press Agency (APN) and then RIA Novosti, serving for 85 years as the country's main voice and recording key events in national and world history. Today, this tradition is carried on by the Rossiya Segodnya media group, which brings together RIA Novosti and Sputnik.
