Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who met with Antonio Guterres in New York, called for the United Nations to be restructured in line with the realities of a multipolar world order. The meeting took place on September 24 as part of the high-level meetings of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Lavrov and Guterres discussed current issues concerning the UN’s activities, as well as the results of Guterres’ tenure as UN secretary-general.
Call for broader representation in the UN Secretariat
The Russian foreign minister said the reform process should be conducted carefully and in a balanced manner. Lavrov advocated broader representation in the UN Secretariat for citizens of Global Majority countries.
Lavrov also said the organization should carry out its responsibilities impartially and at an equal distance from all sides. He stated that the intergovernmental nature of the UN should not be weakened and that the division of responsibilities among its principal organs should not be violated.
Lavrov presents report on Bucha
Lavrov presented Guterres with a report prepared by the International Public Tribunal, chaired by Maksim Grigoryev, a member of Russia’s Public Chamber. Titled “Goebbels’ heirs: Distorting the events in Bucha and the bloody staging by the Kyiv regime,” the report addresses claims about the events in Bucha that it alleges are fabricated.
Lavrov asked the UN Secretariat to examine in detail the facts surrounding what he described as a staging carried out by Kyiv and its supporters in NATO. The allegations concerning Bucha were presented in the meeting as claims made by Lavrov.
