The Russian government has imposed a new ban on cryptocurrency mining to bring energy consumption under control. The decree signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin bans cryptocurrency production in certain parts of Moscow, the Moscow region, and the Kursk region from August 15, 2026 to December 31, 2032.
Published on the official legal information portal, the decision aims to ease pressure on energy infrastructure. The ban follows a proposal by the Moscow Region Energy Ministry in April.
1 GW energy consumption in Moscow region
According to the ministry’s data, crypto mining activities in the capital and surrounding area lead to an energy consumption of around 1 gigawatt. This high consumption is one of the main reasons for the ban.
