The dispute between Russia and Japan
The Kuril Islands, which remain disputed between Russia and Japan, are at the center of diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Iturup Island, part of the Sakhalin Region, is located in the southern section of the Kuril Islands chain. The islands, which were under Japanese control until the end of World War II, came under the control of the former Soviet Union in 1945.
