Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is in close contact with the United States, including SpaceX founder Elon Musk, on space issues. He made the remarks on October 28 on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa forum in Moscow.
“Elon Musk is a brilliant person, truly brilliant,” Putin said. He noted that Musk has “more than 5,000” satellites in orbit, “while we are only taking our first steps.”
It is important not to interfere with one another in orbit
According to Putin, the main focus of the contacts is low-Earth-orbit satellite constellations. “We are in close contact with our American partners,” he said, stressing that it is important not to interfere with one another in orbit and to maintain discipline and order.
The president added that Roscosmos and other Russian companies are working closely with their American partners despite all the political issues.
Russia is creating its own Starlink analogue
Putin also said Russia is proud to have begun creating its own system similar to Starlink. The project involves the Rassvet low-Earth-orbit constellation for broadband internet access, which is being developed by Bureau 1440, a company belonging to the IX Holding. In March, 16 satellites from the constellation were placed into orbit.
Musk and Starlink draw Moscow’s attention
The Starlink satellite network has been widely used by the Ukrainian army since the war began in 2022, repeatedly prompting criticism in Moscow.
Putin had previously spoken highly of Musk. In April 2025, while addressing students at Bauman Moscow State Technical University, he compared the entrepreneur with Sergei Korolev, a pioneer of Soviet space exploration.
