Poland and Lithuania are drawing up a joint cross-border evacuation plan that would allow some residents of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to be moved into Poland in the event of a major crisis or military threat, Polish broadcaster TVP reported.
“The Suwałki Gap is of huge importance, both militarily and logistically,” said Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre. A detailed plan will follow a bilateral agreement. The work is part of Lithuania’s “Vyčio Skliautas 2026” exercise, running from September 25 to October 3; officials stressed it does not signal an imminent threat.
