The massive wildfires raging for days in southwestern France's Gironde region have severely impacted the country's economy and social life. French government spokespeople said that the fires have forced more than 13,000 businesses to temporarily halt operations.
French Economy and Finance Minister Roland Lescure convened an emergency meeting in response to the natural disaster. Speaking to journalists, Lescure stressed that the situation remains difficult and noted that the fires have not only environmental but also serious economic consequences.
42,000 hectares consumed by flames
French officials described the Gironde fire as one of the largest in the country's history. Authorities announced that the flames have so far covered around 42,000 hectares, forcing more than 200,000 people to evacuate. Firefighting teams are working to bring the blaze under control, but it has not yet been fully contained.
