Belgium lost more than 2,000 citizens due to the extreme heat that swept across Europe at the end of June.
According to data from the European Mortality Monitoring Network (EuroMOMO), the death rate in Belgium rose to 48% during the heat wave. Over the same period, the rate was recorded as 23% in France and 13% in the Netherlands.
Experts say that a "thermal dome" created by high-pressure systems trapped hot air over Europe, leading to record-breaking temperatures.
The data showed that extreme weather events had a more devastating impact, particularly in low-income neighborhoods.
Climate change and greenhouse gas emissions are making such extreme weather events more severe, with baseline temperatures rising compared to previous levels.
