Ukraine's negotiations for European Union membership have been hit by a new delay due to Hungary's obstruction. Ukraine-based European Pravda reported, citing unnamed sources, that the opening of two negotiation clusters has been postponed to September. The parties failed to reach an agreement at the planned July 22 meeting.
European Pravda had earlier reported on July 18 that Hungary blocked the two negotiation clusters, and the matter was postponed to July 22 after failing to reach consensus.
In early June, the Hungarian Prime Minister stated that Budapest would not block the start of Ukraine's EU negotiations after reaching an agreement with Kyiv on the rights of Transcarpathian Hungarians. However, it was stressed that Hungary opposes accelerated membership for any country, including Ukraine, and adheres to a 'merit-based' approach.
