Lithuanian Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas said on Oct. 7 that he had asked Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas to deploy Lithuanian Armed Forces units to help border guards protect the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region.

Katelynas called it "a preventive decision, so that we are prepared and can stop similar incidents," adding there was no reason to panic and the situation at the border was calm.

The request followed incidents on Oct. 6 at Latvia’s border with Belarus, where armed individuals escorted groups of irregular migrants and masked people crossed, stole equipment and returned. Lithuania’s parliament also voted the same day to begin lifting the constitutional ban on deploying nuclear weapons.
