Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov made statements regarding the phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump that took place last weekend.
Peskov said the call was a good opportunity to convey Russia's position to Washington at the highest level and 'firsthand'.
"It was a good opportunity at the presidential level to convey our position to the US President firsthand"
he said.
The Kremlin spokesman refrained from assessing how Trump received Russia's statements, saying, "It is not for us to talk about Trump's reaction. You can direct that question to our colleagues in the US administration, at the White House."
Peskov stressed that Putin and Trump agreed on the need to continue contacts in the near future. This statement came amid reports that the two leaders had agreed to speak by phone after Trump's meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the NATO summit.
"Indeed, both President Putin and President Trump have an understanding that their contacts will continue in the near future"
he said.
The Kremlin spokesman described the US President's stance on the Ukraine conflict as 'quite consistent.' Noting that claims Trump frequently changes his views do not reflect reality, Peskov said, "President Trump has a quite consistent position on Ukraine, and all these fabrications that he changes his mind like a weather vane certainly do not correspond to the truth."
Peskov added that Trump was open to listening to the information Putin conveyed.
Joint exercises with China 'not aimed at anyone'
The Kremlin spokesman also answered questions about China. Stressing that the joint military exercises of Russia and China do not target any country, Peskov said Beijing does not threaten any state in the Asia-Pacific region or the world.
Assessing the People's Republic of China's test of a submarine-launched strategic missile, Peskov stated that this is China's 'sovereign right.'
"China's testing of its own missile and continuing its military buildup is its sovereign right. China does not threaten any state in the region, nor anyone in the world, and China is our great ally and strategic partner"
he said.
