Germany is investigating a Ukrainian national detained in Brandenburg’s Oder-Spree district on suspicion of working for a foreign intelligence service. The Federal Prosecutor General’s Office said the suspect was believed to have acted in the interests of Russian intelligence.
An arrest warrant was issued for the suspect on 15 October. Investigators alleged that the individual collected military-related information in Germany while the war between Russia and Ukraine was ongoing.
Alleged contact with Russian intelligence
According to the Federal Prosecutor General’s Office, the suspect established contact with Russian intelligence through an intermediary by July 2025 at the latest. The suspect allegedly then collected information in Germany about the production of military vehicles, ammunition and explosives.

The investigation also alleges that information was gathered about military facilities and personnel in areas supporting the protection of NATO’s eastern flank. The Federal Prosecutor General’s Office said some of the data was obtained from publicly available sources, while other information came from representatives of parts of Europe’s defense industry.
Decision on detention expected
The suspect is scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday. The court will decide at the hearing whether the suspect will be remanded in custody.
