A Moscow court sentenced Russian libertarian and media personality Mikhail Svetov to one year in prison in absentia. The Moscow Prosecutor’s Office said the ruling was issued because he had violated the country’s "foreign agent" law.
The court ordered Svetov to serve his sentence in a medium-security penal colony. The arbitration court also banned him from operating websites or online accounts for three years.
Online writings cited as the basis for the violation
According to the Moscow Prosecutor’s Office, Svetov published articles online while outside Russia but did not indicate that the content had been prepared and published by “a person performing the functions of a foreign agent.”
Svetov had already been fined at least five times for the same violation after being added to Russia’s “foreign agent” list in November 2022.

Svetov left Russia in 2021
Svetov, 41, left Russia in 2021 after police raided his home and he was held under administrative arrest for nine days. These developments were linked to demonstrations supporting opposition leader Aleksey Navalny, who has since died.
Libertarian Party also on the “foreign agent” list
In July, Russia’s Justice Ministry added the unregistered Russian Libertarian Party, which Svetov had previously led, to its “foreign agent” database.
Reports published in state media during the same period alleged that Svetov faced accusations of “justifying Nazism” over a video of a Ukrainian-language song he shared online.
