Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office charged Ukrainian national V. K. over allegations that she failed to assist Abkhaz blogger Daur Buava after finding him in critical condition at his rented apartment in Tbilisi.
Buava was born in the Abkhaz city of Tkuarchal and moved to Georgia after being accused of treason in Abkhazia in 2022. Security officials detained a foreign national woman the following day as part of the investigation into the blogger, who was found dead at his apartment in Tbilisi on Friday.
Timeline of the investigation
The Prosecutor’s Office said Buava lived alone in a rented apartment in Tbilisi’s Didi Digomi district. At around 1:04 a.m. on August 23, his acquaintance V. K., who reportedly had methadone with her, arrived at the apartment.
Investigators allege that the two used drugs together. In her statement, V. K. said Buava told her that the substance he had used was insufficient and asked for more. V. K. also began feeling unwell at around 3:00 a.m. and lost consciousness.
The Prosecutor’s Office alleges that V. K. regained consciousness only on Tuesday morning. At around 9:00 a.m., she found Buava breathing with difficulty, in critical condition and unconscious. V. K. also reportedly felt unwell, left the apartment out of fear and failed to inform anyone about Buava’s condition.
Georgia’s Prosecutor’s Office said V. K. had a duty to care for Buava and was able to intervene and save his life. The charge is based on the “leaving a person in danger” provision under Article 128 of Georgia’s Criminal Code.
Evidence examined and new detentions
The Prosecutor’s Office said chemical analysis confirmed that Buava had used methadone and alcohol. Methadone was also found in the apartment.
Security camera footage showed Buava meeting with V. K. throughout the night and later leaving the building several times. The footage showed V. K. leaving the building at 9:43 a.m. on Tuesday; local residents in the building helped her.
The case is being handled by Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs. In addition to security camera footage, investigators seized mobile phones and computer equipment belonging to Buava and people connected to the case. Witnesses are being questioned, while medical and other examinations continue.
The Prosecutor’s Office said it would petition the court within the statutory period to have V. K. detained. Two more people were detained in the same case after drugs were found during searches. One of them is accused of giving V. K. the drugs that she allegedly later used with Buava.
