Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has detained an 18-year-old resident of the Mari El Republic in its capital, Yoshkar-Ola, on suspicion of working with Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR). The FSB released video of the arrest; according to Russian media, the young man was detained on the street in broad daylight while walking with his girlfriend.
The FSB alleges that he contacted a Ukrainian intelligence representative online and, in exchange for payment, collected information on defense industry and law enforcement facilities in the region.
Facing life in prison
A criminal case for high treason, which carries a sentence of up to life imprisonment under Russian law, has been opened against him. A court ordered him held in custody for the duration of the investigation.
In released footage of his interrogation, the detainee says his handler tried to persuade him to set fire to military buildings and vehicles. The FSB's claims have not been independently verified.
