Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) alleged that preparations were made to attack a Black Sea Fleet serviceman in Crimea on August 24. According to the agency, the plan involved recruitment, visual reconnaissance, the placement of an explosive device and remotely blowing up the vehicle.
The FSB announced that a resident of Yevpatoria had been detained. According to the statement, the person passed information to the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) about facilities belonging to the Russian Armed Forces, as well as the addresses of Black Sea Fleet servicemen and public figures in Crimea. The FSB also alleged that the person had been offered payment to kill a fleet serviceman by blowing up his vehicle.
Details of the alleged attack preparations
According to an FSB officer’s account in a video published by the agency, the suspect was asked to visually inspect the locations where servicemen stayed in Simferopol, the vehicles they used and security cameras after being recruited via Telegram.
The alleged preparations then called for an explosive device to be placed under a serviceman’s vehicle at night in Sevastopol. The FSB officer said that the person who would carry out the attack was expected to wait for the serviceman to get into the vehicle and then trigger the device remotely.
Alleged change of clothes for escape
The FSB statement said that after the explosion, the suspect was supposed to go to a courtyard, put on spare clothes hidden in a garbage container, discard the clothes he was wearing and leave the area.
The allegations concerning the incident are based on the FSB officer’s account in the agency’s video. No independent verification of the details of the alleged attack plan was provided.
